The new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force on 25th May 2018, replacing the existing EU data protection directive and will directly apply in the UK from that date, notwithstanding Brexit. A new Data Protection Bill will also be published by the Government shortly which will, in due course, replace the current Data Protection Act 1998.

The GDPR and new Data Protection Bill provide stronger privacy rights for individuals and impose more prescriptive compliance obligations on those that process personal data, including local authorities. There are serious consequences for non-compliance with GDPR including fines of up to £17,000,000. Local authorities therefore need to ensure they are prepared for the new regime and that they have data protection officers, practitioners and lawyers in their legal teams who fully understand the new legal framework and how it applies to their local authorities.

LLG Legal Training, in association with Womble Bond Dickinson, is providing a series of one day intensive GDPR workshops across the UK, including in Newcastle, Leeds, Bristol and London to help members to prepare for the GDPR. The workshops will provide attendees with a full introduction to the GDPR and what it means for local authorities including:

  • an overview of the legislative framework, Brexit and the new Data Protection Bill
  • the key changes introduced by GDPR
  • a deep dive into various topics including Transparency, Contracts and Data Sharing, Individual's Rights, Compliance Requirements, Data Breaches, the Regulator's Powers, Fines and Compensation
  • practical tips on what local authorities can do to prepare

The workshops will be practical and interactive with plenty of time for discussion and group exercises including case studies. Jackie Gray, a Partner at Womble Bond Dickinson who specialises in information law, will lead the workshops. A local authority lawyer in each of the regions will also present parts of the workshop and share ideas and knowledge about how their local authorities are implementing GDPR.
