When it is implemented on 25th May, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will replace the existing EU data protection directive and apply directly in the UK, notwithstanding Brexit. GDPR provides stronger privacy rights for individuals and imposes more prescriptive compliance obligations on those processing personal data, including local authorities. With serious consequences for non-compliance, it is essential that local authorities ensure they have data protection officers, practitioners and lawyers in their legal teams who understand the new framework and how it applies to them. Once 25th May has been and gone and it is business as usual for councils, data protection teams must keep abreast of best practice and ensure they continue to maintain compliance with the new regime.

Also on the horizon is the Data Protection Bill, which will make data protection laws fit for the digital age, empower people to take control of their data, support UK businesses and organisations through the change, and ensure that the UK is prepared for the future once we have left the EU.

LLG Legal Training’s Information Management Conference 2018 will provide a highly topical and practical day’s training, bringing you up to date with the current issues facing those working in this challenging area. Sessions will include GDPR lawful processing, data breaches under GDPR, FOI case law developments, the Data Protection Bill, and the section 40 exemption under FOI.

This conference is a must attend for all local authority data protection and freedom of information lawyers, officers and practitioners, and anyone involved in the processing of data within councils.
