Target Audience

The course is aimed at those clerking independent review panels, solicitors advising on school exclusions, Head teachers, school governors, Academies, local authority officers and members of independent review panels.


This course provides a comprehensive update on the latest developments in school exclusions law.

The focus of the course will be on the school exclusions guidance which came into effect in September 2017, practical tips for independent review panels, and how to avoid legal challenges including judicial reviews, or complaints of maladministration to the Local Government Ombudsman or to the Education and Skills Funding Agency.

The course will cover:

  • Latest governmental changes on school exclusions
  • What now for exclusion review panels
  • DfE guidance on school discipline and pupil behaviour policies
  • Are your Head Teachers and Governors fully aware of their statutory duties with regard to policies and exclusions?
  • Do you understand the mechanics of exclusion?
  • Are the Clerks of Governing bodies and IRPs trained and aware of their role and responsibilities?
  • The role of the SEN expert

  • Practice and procedure

  • The Human Rights Act 1998 as it impacts on exclusions
