This brand-new masterclass offers delegates a unique opportunity to benefit from a topical, real life practical perspective of licensing law in action. The course is suitable for experienced practitioners, particularly those with responsibility for providing legal advice to a Licensing Authority, the Police or a Responsible Authority. Delegates with intermediate to advanced knowledge of licensing law and procedure will benefit most, although those with lesser knowledge and a desire to learn are also very welcome. The course will focus on Hackney/Private Hire and Alcohol/Regulated Entertainment licensing.
The day will include the following three core sessions, each of which will cover the topic from the taxi and 2003 Act perspective, looking at areas of commonality of case law and processes:
Each of the core sessions will examine in detail its subject, the relevant law and its practical application. The sessions will each have one or more practical exercises in which delegates will play a full part. Delegates will be requested to consider these areas of practice in advance and invited to submit questions or practical examples of difficulties they have encountered for possible discussion on the day. Any examples should be anonymised.
The course will also include a number of ‘hot topic’ workshop sessions taken from the following list:
These sessions will explore the latest developments in the specific area and discuss the direction of travel. The ‘temperature’ of each topic will be assessed two weeks before the course to finalise the hottest, which will be discussed on the day.
The day will conclude with an open forum Q&A session, time and the previous sessions permitting.
This course will cover the following aspects of the SRA’s Statement of solicitor competence:
A2 Maintain the level of competence and legal knowledge needed to practice effectively, taking into account changes in their role and/or practice context and developments in the law
