This course is suitable for anyone involved in planning appeals including advocates, witnesses and administrators.

This course provides an overview of the planning appeal process (with a particular focus on giving evidence and advocacy at public inquiries) and will cover:

  • Reasons for refusal: when they are justifiable and when they are not.
  • The types of appeal: written representations, informal hearings and public inquiries.
  • Preparation of appeal documentation including statements of case and proofs of evidence.
  • Public Inquiries: examination in chief, cross-examination and re-examination; inquiry tactics; giving evidence as a witness; principles of advocacy.
  • Legal submissions.
  • Site visits.
  • Costs applications: when they are justifiable and how to respond to them

This course will cover the following aspects of the SRA’s Statement of solicitor competence:
