This course will examine the key principles of contaminated land and air quality for planners, focusing on the key sources of guidance, the management of risk, contaminated land assessments, and remediation. The course will cover the following:

  • Overview: EU influences, international influences, sources of guidance
  • What is contaminated land? The EA 1995 definition, definitions for planning process, landfill sites
  • The assessment and management of risk by reference to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as an example
  • Contaminated land assessments: overview of Phase 1 and Phase 2 assessments
  • Phase 1 assessments
  • Phase 2 assessments
  • Remediation strategies
  • Mitigation strategies: the management of VOCs as an example
  • Contaminated land and the planning process: the NPPF, the NPPG
  • Contaminated land and environmental impact assessments
  • Contaminated land and planning conditions
  • Contaminated land and planning obligations
  • Contaminated land and development plans
  • Air quality: as a material planning consideration

Target Audience

This course is aimed at all those working within planning who may deal with contaminated land.
