Local Authority legal departments have over the last year been through an immense period of irreversible change. Perhaps you have noticed?

Adaptive lawyers learn to adapt to ever-changing circumstances - updating specialist legal know-how; adjusting to hybrid working and remote meetings; navigating innovative technology and digital courts; contemplating a redrafted rule book on standards and understanding where local authorities sit in the new societal norm. An adaptive lawyer learns from reflecting both on the successes and the mistakes of the last year, whilst embracing positively on the improvements and challenges the future will bring.

Join us on the 28th and 29th of June 2021 for the LLG Annual Online Conference 2021, designed to inspire you whilst creating opportunity to focus on your professional development, enabling you to improve your delivery and your outlook. Who doesn’t want to be a better lawyer?

Plenary topics will include a forward look at planning, regeneration and creating smart cities, the impact of the pandemic and the consequent transformation of local government provision, local government workforce and the workplace of the future, equality and diversity, the levelling up agenda, climate change and many more. Attendees will have a wide range of options to choose from to tailor their knowledge and learning to a specific area of interest. There will be breakout sessions designed to be of particular interest to junior lawyers.

Full programme will be released in due course, however, to kick off the conference, join us for a session on the “Future Shape of Local Government” chaired by LLG’s President, Quentin Baker.

Over the last year, the pandemic brought the importance and value of local decision making to the fore. Yet many local authorities struggled with lack of resources, with some on a financial knife edge. Crisis decision making brought with it a new approach to governance and scrutiny. With the elections came a shift in control in many areas, and new leadership and ideas. So, what should we learn from this and what does the future hold?

Speakers will include Viv Geary who will elaborate on lessons learned from the Liverpool best value report, Jacqui McKinlay who will speak about the essential tools of Scrutiny and Governance in the prevention of failure and Bethan Evans who will talk about management of a swiftly changing political landscape and speaking truth to power.
